FAQs

Below we’ve listed some of the most interesting Niagara Falls Facts unique to our destination, which locals have come across over the years. We hope that this helps you prepare for your Niagara Falls vacation and may even enlighten you with the potential health benefits of your visit to our famous Falls.

  • What are the potential Health Benefits of Niagara Falls?

Niagara Falls itself produces a high concentration of healthy, serotonin producing “negative ions” which has been found to inspire positive feelings in the millions that visit the destination every year.

It is has been widely researched that Niagara Falls has a healthy ‘negative ion count that exceeds 100,000 per cubic centimeter’, and is known to be the largest negative ion generator in the world.

Research also indicates that the positive ions that are released after a rainstorm for example counteract the unhealthy positive ions that exist in the air. With the size and intensity of the Falls themselves, Niagara Falls has been recognized to produce an abundance of healthy negative ions 365 days a year and in quantities not found anywhere else in the world.

The inspiration generated at places like Niagara Falls have a direct relationship to the lowering of serotonin levels in the blood, caused by the waves of negative ions from the spray of these falls. This overdose of negative ions is known to ease tension and pressures, leaving people full of energy and feelings of renewal.

  • Border Crossing at Niagara Falls

If you are a citizen of the United States, you do require a passport to enter into Canada at any one of the three US/Canadian borders in the area. If you are a permanent resident of the U.S., you should bring your Permanent Resident Card (i.d. green card) with you.

U.S. citizens traveling by air, including children, must present a passport or other approved travel document when entering the United States by air. U.S. citizens can present a passport, NEXUS card at airports with NEXUS kiosks, U.S. military ID with travel orders, or a U.S. Merchant Mariner Document when on official business. Beginning June 1, 2009, U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry are required to have documents that comply with the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), most commonly a U.S. passport, a passport card, a trusted traveler card such as NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST, or an enhanced driver’s license.

  • Additional Niagara Falls Facts

The following are questions that have been asked by the millions of tourists from around the world who visit Niagara Falls each year. Although the answers to some of these questions may seem obvious – we thought we would share some of the more interesting questions locals have heard over the years.

    1. When do you turn off the Falls?
Answer: Niagara Falls never stops flowing.

    2. Can you turn down the volume of noise coming from the Falls?
Answer: Turning down the roar of the Falls as it crashes down to the base is not possible. Most Fallsview hotels located in the Fallsview Boulevard district have windows that open to experience the sound – which also close so the noise is not disturbing.

    3. Is there a ride-a-barrel over Niagara Falls attraction?
Answer: No. Many daredevils have attempted this. Riding over the Falls in a barrel is illegal and dangerous. But there are plenty of Niagara Falls attractions to keep visitors busy at the Falls throughout the year.
